Getting to Grips with Reading
These First Reading Books are for young children just starting to read independently. We have chosen these titles to encourage young children to engage with a broad range of books, which will help to advance reading skills in years 1 and 2.
Starting on the first page below, these very simple picture books have just 1-3 lines of text per page. The books on page 2 are slightly longer picture books with a wider range of vocabulary and about 4-5 lines of text per page. And towards the end of the list are a few of our favourite first chapter books.
For longer, more challenging chapter books for more able readers see the ‘Reading For Pleasure’ books for Year 1 and Year 2, or the ‘Getting to Grips with Reading’ list for LKS2.
