Spending Pupil Premium Funding on Books

You can spend your Pupil Premium Funding in two ways:

Buy new books for your library or classroom; you might want to choose books for a particular project or you would like to expand the “Reading for Pleasure” bookshelves – the choice is yours. You can browse our webpages for ideas or you can let us do the work to find great books for your needs.

“A Book of Their Own”; let us know a child’s name and year group and his reading preferences, and we will send the book gift wrapped to them, straight to their address or to the school.

Research by the National Literacy Trust has shown that children who are eligible for free school meals are much less likely to own books of their own. Their study revealed a strong link between young peoples’ reading ability and their access to books at home. They conclude that “without access to books of their own children are less likely to have positive experiences of reading, less likely to do well at school and less likely to be engaged in reading in any form.”

Key findings:

  • 9% of children and young people say that they don’t own have a book of their own at home, a statistic that has remained static over the past year. This means that 1 in 11 children and young people in the UK miss the benefits of having their own books
  • This ratio drops to 1 in 8 pupils who receive free school meals who told us that they don’t have a book of their own at home
  • 51.24 is the average number of books owned by children and young people who say that they have books of their own at home
  • Not only do fewer disadvantaged pupils say that they have a book of their own at home than their advantaged peers, but those who do have books of their own report fewer books than their more advantaged peers (39.8 vs. 52.6)

'A Book of Their Own' Scheme

By providing a child with ‘A Book of Their Own’ you can help close the gap between those who have access to books at home and those who don’t. By using Pupil Premium Funding to give exciting, accessible, relevant and fun books you promote reading for pleasure and allow children to feel confident around books and proud of book ownership.

A ‘Book of Their Own’ scheme costs £100 per child, per year, invoiced yearly when the first book is sent. We will select a book each month and send to the child, either at school or you can opt to have it sent directly to them at home. Alternatively, if your school is local to our Lewes-based shop, you can bring the child in to choose their own books. We will discuss their favourite books with them and help with our recommendations, and it will add even more excitement to their love for books.

Please provide a seperate form for each child that you wish to receive ‘A Book of Their Own’ scheme.
