A visit to Lewes.

Our shop is in a beautiful town in East Sussex, and if you are planning to visit us, we have some ideas for you to fill a whole day out in Lewes.  (when you have finished buying children’s books of course).

Lewes is full of mostly independent shops, great antique shops and  cafes, and  a brilliant fortnightly farmers market- @lewesfarmersmarket . There is a nature reserve area to explore close to the centre of town, The Railway Land @LewesRailwayLand. If you want to picnic you can go there, or to the gardens at Southover Grange near the train station. History fans will be interested in Lewes castle, and Anne of Cleves House, @lewescastle_and_anneofcleves.

How to Find Us.

If you are driving to Lewes, there are several car parks very close to us – our address is 1 South Street BN7 2BT.

If you are arriving in Lewes by train, come out of the station  turn right and walk up Station Street. Call in @cacciaandtails on the way for magnificent focaccia genovese and italian cakes and pastries.Continue walking up the fairly steep hill to the Tourist Information at the crossroads.

Turn left for the Castle, or turn right to walk along a few yards and then down the hill, which gives great views of the town. Before you start going down the hill, which is called School Hill round here but is marked as High st, you will see a monument of an angel. At this point you could take a detour left to visit The Needlemakers. This is a georgian factory building, now home to lots of different shops, and a cafe. Opposite is Lewes Flea Market in an old church- @thefamouslewesfleamarket- lots of stalls, full of amazing finds. Anyway, find your way back to the monument to continue your trip to Bags of Books.

Go down the hill past @flintowlbakery, (amazing sourdough), cross the road to visit Wickle,@wickle.co.uk. This is a beautiful emporium of all sorts of treasures, clothes, homewares, and toys. At the bottom of the hill, cross the road but keep going in the same direction through a pedestrianised shopping area. Most days there are  fruit and veg stalls and plants here.

Almost There.

Keep going over a little humpback bridge to very picturesque views of Harvey’s Brewery, @harveysbrewery, and their shop. Real Ale Fans can call in here. Opposite is the original branch of Bill’s Restaurant. If you look straight down the street now,  you will see us at the very end. Continue down the street past The Trading Post-@tradingpostcoffeeroasters (delicious), and you will find lots more antique shops and independent shops including @leadbetterandgood. At the  end of the street you will find us, Bags of Books, at 1 South Street BN7 2BT.

You Found Us!

Come and say hello and after you have finished looking at books, we will tell you more places to go and things to see on your day out in Lewes. You’ll probably want to stop in at @irmas_kitchen6102 just opposite us, which we would highly recommend, especially their caribbean dishes.
