  1. Joanne

A magical realist style story which begins in a Siberian work camp. I liked the historical setting of this, the references to the Russian revolution, and the theme of imagination being suppressed. Vivid descriptions of the landscape, of Svetlana’s fantastical castle with its guardian Pechal , and the brutal winter form a strong background to the adventure.
I liked the Russian folkloric quality of the story, the babushka, magic mirrors, shadow wolves etc and its strong themes of loyalty, friendship and determination, and the surprisingly redemptive quality of the ending.
